WHAT TO DO IN ANGERS IN ONE DAY?
It's too short to see everything, especially if you want to discover the museums, but it's enough to get a first glimpse of the city.
This small circuit will take you 25 minutes to walk without counting the many stops that will accompany your walk in the city.
Let's start with the Lafayette Market, the favorite place for many Filipinos
Located near the train station, you can find a bit of everything…. The Place Lafayette market, opens every Wednesday and Saturday, it includes everything, the classic market for local producers, for cheese lovers, the most beautiful stalls including regional goat cheeses.
During our walk in Angers, we will look for the streets-art. Another way to visit the city for several years, the walls of Angers have been covered with works of urban art. Some are permanent, others short-lived.
The Saint-Martin collegiate church which reopened to the public in 2006 after extensive restoration work. The visit is as interesting for the history of the building, built on the remains of the Roman city, as for the collection of religious statues it houses.
In the district of the historic center or "Cité" we find the two emblematic monuments: the castle and the Saint Maurice cathedral.
Also, you can start from Place Sainte-Croix where the famous Maison Adam is located, which dates from 1491 and is a listed Historic Monument.
Then, continue towards the dynamic Place du Ralliement, to see the Grand Théâtre. This square is considered the heart of the city.
Then, head to the Blue House, covered with mosaics.
Then, the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin, a Carolingian monument from the High Middle Ages, with its statues and religious works of art.
Finally, continue towards the Place du Ralliement square, which is in a way the main square of Angers, where everyone meets. It must be said that this place returned to pedestrians is particularly pleasant, and even more so in summer when it is vegetated.
Place du Ralliement is the commercial heart of downtown Angers. It hosts major brands including Galeries Lafayette., Bershka, Nature et Découvertes, Etam, Eram, Devred and many cafes and restaurants.
After a bit of shopping, head to Saint Maurice Cathedral
St Maurice Cathedral is at the top of a monumental staircase that leads to the bank of the Maine.
St Maurice Cathedral, begun in the middle of the 12th century and completed around 1250, is the first building to present the characteristics of the Angevin Gothic style: domed vaults with warheads, initially massive in the nave, then giving way to fine ribs in the transept and the choir. The cathedral also allows you to admire a fine set of stained glass windows from the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries.
If there is one thing to see absolutely in Angers, it is its castle.
Don't be intimidated by the intimidating towers: once through the door, we discover the castle in a completely different aspect with inside a pleasant garden in which we could stroll all afternoon.
A word of advice, to better admire the whole exterior of the castle, I advise you to cross the river: it is from the other bank that you become aware of the defensive aspect of the castle built on a rocky promontory.
From my point of view, if the visit of the castle of Angers is essential, it is it shelters the Tapestry of the Apocalypse, the largest tapestry which remains to us from the time of the Middle Ages. Another particularity of the Apocalypse Tapestry is the originality of the theme treated.… Here, the scenes are worthy of a science fiction film with multi-headed monsters! The tapestry tells the story of the Apocalypse according to St John, which tells of the surge of catastrophes on the earth following the opening of 7 seals.
We must continue our walk on the ramparts of the castle, we enjoy a superb panorama of the old town of Angers, on the Maine as well as on the interior gardens of the castle.
Leaving the castle, stroll for a few moments on the promenade at the end of the world. What a poetic name for this pretty square, at the end, you can admire a superb panorama of the Maine and the Doutre, the district of Angers being located on the other bank.
Then head to the banks of La Maine for a moment of pure happiness. A walk on the shore allows you to have another point of view on the city and certain monuments.
It is also possible to rent kayaks and paddles, as well as small electric boats without a license. To do this, head to the charming little port of La Savatte, where you can also see barges. Here is a fun outdoor activity to do in Angers.
La Doutre cross the Verdun bridge and let yourself be seduced by the charm of the Doutre district: the Place du Tertre Saint-Laurent, the Ronceray Abbey, the Jean-Lurçat Museum, the half-timbered houses and the facades of the hotels individuals. Two steps away
The city's museums
Several museums are worth visiting in Angers. The Museum of Fine Arts is located in the Logis Barrault, a mansion dating from the 15th century. The imposing residence has received prestigious guests such as Marie de Médicis and Louis XII. In the majestic state room you can see beautiful exhibitions. Two routes are offered to visitors, one on the History of Angers and one on the Fine Arts (works from the 14th century to the present day).
As for the Pincé museum, it is located in a rich mansion from the beginning of the 16th century, in the heart of the city, the Logis Pincé. You can admire Egyptian and Greco-Roman antiquities there, as well as pre-Columbian art or art from China and Japan. The engineering museum is entirely dedicated to military art
The local gastronomy
Take advantage of your stay in the capital of Anjou to taste the local specialities! There is something for every taste ! Try the fried fish, the grilled mushroom “galipettes”, the Angevin calf’s ass and the chicken fricassee. Not to mention the famous plum pâté.
For dessert, the essential “Crémant d’Anjou”, made with fresh cream and egg white. And for those with a sweet tooth, the “Quernons d’Ardoise”, a chocolate specialty. Liven up the meal with the wines of Anjou and as a digestive a small glass of liqueur with the famous Cointreau. Tasting local specialties is one of the must-do things in Angers!
The parks and green spaces of Angers
Angers, nicknamed "the green city" has around thirty parks and gardens. The Jardin du Mail, in the town centre, is a very beautiful French-style garden, embellished with a gigantic fountain. The Jardin des Plantes is very pleasant, in addition it has a playground for children.
During another trip we could consider going to Terra Botanica, a must-see park, to visit at the gates of Angers. The first plant park in Europe extends over 12 hectares and brings together more than 500,000 plants from all continents. It allows you to know everything about the history of plants over six centuries. You can see a tropical jungle, a greenhouse with 2,000 orchids, carnivorous plants, thousand-year-old trees, butterflies...
And why not take a boat trip there, or fly over the park in the biggest gas balloon in the world! Not forgetting to pedal in a nutshell, fixed on an overhead rail, through the treetops.
