WHAT TO DO DURING THIS TRIP?
• Stroll through old Vienna
The center of Vienna concentrates the medieval and baroque architecture of the city. Walking through its streets, many of which are pedestrianized, is enchanting. In the heart of the old town is the famous Gothic-style St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom).
Don't miss the romantic Schönlaterngasse, stop at Mozart's house and stroll past the shops of the Graben. Along the way, you will notice a few more modern buildings, such as the Loos Haus (Michaelerplatz, 3), an early 20th century modernist manifesto or the ultra-modern Haas Haus, which is just opposite Stephansdom.
• See Klimt's Kiss at the Belvedere
Painting that represents the artistic movement of Vienna, the world capital of modernity at the beginning of the 20th century. In fact, Klimt's The Kiss is to Vienna what The Mona Lisa is to Paris.
To admire it, you have to go to the Belvedere, a set of two 18th century castles which are among the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Europe. It houses the Oberes Belvedere (Upper Belvedere) museum and its rooms dedicated to Impressionism, Realism and the Viennese Secession led by Klimt and Schiele.
• Get drunk on art at the Museumsquartier (among others...)
The MuseumsQuartier brings together around fifty museums, performance halls, cinemas, cafes, restaurants... A beautiful place of culture.
For art lovers, visit the Leopold Museum which shows the art of Vienna around 1900, with the great names of the time: Klimt, Kokoschka, Otto Wagner, Egon Schiele...names of artists that we we will enjoy discovering. Those who prefer modern art should under no circumstances miss the rich collection of neighboring MUMOK (Kandinsky, Magritte, Giacometti, Klee…).
Another museum, the Kunsthistoriches Museum, is also worth visiting for its 12 impressive and exceptional paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
Finally, lovers of beautiful monuments, look for the Hunderwasserhaus and the Kunst Haus.
• Following in the footsteps of Sissi
Who doesn't know: Sissi is a 1955 Austrian film directed by Ernst Marischka and starring Romy Schneider....
Sissi remains inseparable from Vienna.
If you like palaces or castles, imperial treasures, you will have a great time:
- Hofburg, imperial palace and residence of the Habsburg dynasty for more than six centuries. It houses a Sissi museum, one of the most visited in the city
- Schönbrunn Palace, nicknamed the "Austrian Versailles"
• Take a break in a Viennese café
One of the pleasures of Austrians is the Viennese coffee.
Cafes have been around since the end of the 17th century
There are nearly 1,500 cafes in Vienna, where you can enjoy all kinds of beverages accompanied by pastries.
The Central (Herrengasse), a place frequented mainly by tourists, you can try typical Viennese coffees at the Museum (Operngasse, 7) and Hawelka (Dorotheergasse, 6), Prückel (Stubenring, 24), Bräunerhof (Stallburgagsse 2) and Sperl cafés (Gumpendorfer Str 11).
• Have fun at the Prater
Want to change your mind?
The Prater is one of the most famous amusement parks in the world. The former hunting reserve, created in the 16th century by Maximilian II, was opened to the public in 1766 by Joseph II and transformed into an amusement park.
• Shopping at the Naschmarkt
Go shopping or grab a bite to eat in Vienna's most famous market. Austrian products of course, but also from the Balkans, the Orient or elsewhere. Really nice on sunny days. Note: on Saturday morning, a very interesting flea market.
Very close to the market, on Linke Wienzeile (38 & 40), beautiful Jugendstil houses signed by the brilliant architect Otto Wagner.
• Have a drink in a Heuriger
You love wine and good food. Head to the Heuriger, a kind of guinguette in the decor of an old inn backed by a vineyard that only serves its own wine. They are found in the districts of Grinzing, Heiligenstadt, Klosterneuburg, on the outskirts of Vienna.
Sitting at large wooden tables, facing a glass of wine and good food, it is not uncommon to enter into conversation with your neighbors. In autumn and summer, the Viennese forest or the nearby vineyards then invite you to take a walk. In short, what happiness...
• Vienna and Music…
Go to the opera or concert……
Impossible to come to Vienna without attending a concert! Don't be intimidated. Unlike France, classical music is not reserved for the rich, ticket prices are affordable, especially "last minute" rates sold one hour before the show. In short, the classic is rather popular in Vienna.
Many possibilities are available to you, practically all year round, in particular at the prestigious Staatsoper (national opera) and Volksoper for opera, as well as at the Musikverein or the Konzerthaus for concerts. Tickets can be reserved in advance on the websites of the concert halls.
for aficionados of another music try out Vienna's electro scene …….
Take a trip to the Flex on the banks of the Donau Kanal or to the U4 to convince yourself of this. And yes, in Vienna, you can dance until the end of the night!
If you are more rock and alternative, go under the arcades of the U6 metro line, between the Alserstrasse and Thaliastrasse stations, to follow the Viennese beat.
